Packing for a Train Trip in France: Everything You Need to Know About SNCF's Luggage Policy
Traveling through France by train is one of the most scenic and convenient ways to explore the country. But on my last trip with SNCF’s TGV INOUI, I learned a valuable lesson about their luggage policy—the hard way.
It all started when I was packing for my journey from Thailand to France. As someone who loves to be prepared for every occasion, I ended up with more luggage than I had anticipated. For 2 persons with 3 pieces of large luggage, 2 carry-ons, a crossbody bag, and 2 backpack filled with souvenirs from my previous stops. I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal—I had taken trains before and seen people with multiple bags.
Arriving at the station, I confidently made my way to the platform. The train pulled in, and I found my seat. That’s when I noticed the designated luggage areas filling up fast. I managed to squeeze my biggest suitcase in, but my other bags took up more space than I had expected. Just as I was settling in, a ticket inspector approached and asked to check my luggage.
That’s when reality hit me—I had exceeded the standard luggage allowance.
SNCF’s policy permits each passenger to bring two pieces of luggage and one piece of hand luggage, all properly labeled. Anything beyond that comes at a cost. The inspector informed me that I would need to pay an extra fee for my additional bags.
I reluctantly handed over my card and paid the €50 fee for my additional bag. Lesson learned! If only I had checked the luggage policy beforehand, I could have packed smarter or even used SNCF’s luggage delivery service, 'Mes Bagages,' to avoid the hassle.
Looking back, the policy makes sense. Overloaded luggage compartments can create inconvenience and safety issues for all passengers. While it was an unexpected expense, it was also a learning experience. Now, I always double-check the baggage rules before booking my ticket.
So, if you’re planning to travel with SNCF, take my advice—pack wisely, label your bags, and stay within the limit. Your wallet will thank you!
