The Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein opened its first-ever permanent store inside the legendary BHV Marais department store, right in the heart of Le Marais. What could have been a celebration of global fashion quickly turned into a storm of controversy and debate.

A Grand Opening Amid Tension

On November 5, 2025, hundreds of shoppers queued outside BHV Marais to explore the new Shein store. But while excitement filled the air, it was mixed with anger and protest. Demonstrators gathered in front of the building, calling out the brand for its environmental impact, labor practices, and ethical concerns.

At the same time as the opening, the French government announced an investigation and the potential suspension of Shein’s operations across France. Authorities accused the company of allowing illegal products to be sold on its online platform, including child-like dolls and restricted items.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs has asked the European Commission to review the case under the Digital Services Act, which could lead to Shein being temporarily banned across the European Union.
