The French Community Living in Singapore

The French Community Living in Singapore

Introduction

Recently, I have been planning a series of trips across Asia, and one destination that quickly made it onto my itinerary is Singapore.

The reason is simple: I haven't visited Singapore in almost 10 years. My last trip was long before the COVID-19 pandemic, and as I started researching what to see and do, I was amazed by how much the city has changed. New attractions have opened, entire districts have been transformed, and Singapore continues to evolve into one of Asia's most dynamic and innovative cities.

While researching travel information, I came across another fact that surprised me even more.

Singapore is home to a remarkably large French community. According to the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, around 13,000 French nationals are officially registered as residents in Singapore. To put that into perspective, Singapore's population is approximately 6 million people, meaning French nationals account for roughly 0.2% of the country's population. While that may sound like a small percentage, it represents one of the largest French expatriate communities in Southeast Asia.

The more I looked into it, the more fascinating the story became. Beyond the luxury boutiques, bakeries, and restaurants that many visitors associate with France, thousands of French professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and educators contribute to Singapore's economy and cultural life every day.

For a city-state located more than 10,000 kilometers from Paris, Singapore has developed surprisingly deep ties with France. As I continued my research, I realized that the French presence in Singapore is much larger—and far more influential—than most travelers would ever expect.

Here is the story of the unexpected French community living in Singapore.

Singapore's Unofficial "Little France"

One of the most surprising discoveries during my research was learning that Singapore has its own unofficial "Little France."

From what I found online, the neighborhood most commonly associated with the French community is Serangoon Gardens. Over the years, it has become a popular residential area for French expatriates, thanks in part to its proximity to the Lycée Français de Singapour (French International School).

I haven't visited Serangoon Gardens yet, but it is definitely a place I plan to add to my itinerary. The idea of discovering a small French enclave in the middle of Singapore sounds fascinating, and I would love to spend an afternoon wandering through the neighborhood, stopping by a few cafés, and hopefully finding a delicious French pastry and a good cup of coffee.

For travelers interested in experiencing a different side of Singapore, Serangoon Gardens might be one of the city's most unexpected hidden gems—a small corner of France tucked away in Southeast Asia.

A French Community of More Than 13,000 People

According to the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, approximately 13,000 French nationals are officially registered in Singapore, with several thousand more estimated to be living in the city-state without registration.

For a country of Singapore's size, this represents a significant expatriate population. The French community includes entrepreneurs, engineers, researchers, educators, finance professionals, and families who have chosen Singapore as their home in Asia.

The presence of such a large French community reflects the strong economic and cultural ties that have developed between the two nations over the years.

French Researchers Helping Drive Innovation

Singapore has become a major hub for scientific research, and French researchers have played an important role in that success.

The French government reports that around 200 French researchers and academics are based in Singapore. The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) operates four research laboratories in the country, making Singapore one of its most important international research partners.

French and Singaporean institutions collaborate in fields ranging from artificial intelligence and digital technologies to environmental science and engineering. These partnerships help strengthen Singapore's reputation as a global innovation center while providing French researchers with access to one of Asia's most dynamic research environments.

Organizations such as French Lab Singapore further connect scientists, academics, and innovators from both countries, encouraging new collaborations and knowledge sharing.

A Strong Business Footprint

The French presence in Singapore extends far beyond research.

Nearly 1,000 French company subsidiaries operate in Singapore, making the city-state a strategic base for French businesses across Southeast Asia. Major French companies are active in industries including aerospace, technology, finance, logistics, construction, hospitality, and manufacturing.

Singapore serves as a gateway to the broader ASEAN market, allowing French companies to expand throughout the region while benefiting from Singapore's business-friendly environment and world-class infrastructure.

The startup ecosystem is also growing stronger. Communities such as La French Tech Singapore help connect entrepreneurs, investors, and technology professionals who are building the next generation of innovative businesses.

The Influence of French Luxury

Perhaps the most visible sign of French influence can be found on Singapore's famous shopping streets.

French luxury brands have established a powerful presence in Singapore's retail landscape. Along Orchard Road and within the city's premium shopping districts, iconic French fashion, beauty, jewelry, and lifestyle houses attract both local consumers and international visitors.

Singapore's reputation as a luxury retail destination has made it an important market for French brands. The city-state's sophisticated consumers, strong tourism sector, and appreciation for quality craftsmanship align closely with the values associated with French luxury.

As a result, French brands continue to shape trends in fashion, beauty, and premium retail experiences throughout Singapore.

Final Thoughts: A New Side of Singapore I Never Expected to Discover

When I first started planning my return to Singapore after nearly a decade, I was mainly looking for new attractions, restaurants, and experiences. I wanted to see how the city had evolved since my last visit before the pandemic.

What I didn't expect was to discover an entirely different side of Singapore through its French community.

What began as simple travel research led me to learn about thousands of French residents who now call Singapore home. Along the way, I discovered Serangoon Gardens, Singapore's unofficial "Little France," and found myself adding yet another destination to my growing itinerary. Hopefully, I'll get the chance to enjoy a French pastry and coffee there while experiencing a side of Singapore that most tourists never see.

The deeper I looked, the more I realized that the French presence in Singapore extends far beyond cafés, bakeries, and luxury boutiques. French researchers contribute to scientific innovation, French entrepreneurs build businesses, and French companies help drive economic growth across the region.

Perhaps that's what makes Singapore such a fascinating destination. It is a city that constantly reinvents itself while bringing together people, cultures, and ideas from all over the world.

As I prepare for my upcoming trip, I'm even more excited than before. Not only because of the new attractions and neighborhoods waiting to be explored, but because I now know there are unexpected stories hidden throughout the city—stories like the thriving French community that I never knew existed.

And who knows? When I finally return to Singapore, one of my favorite memories might not come from a famous landmark, but from a quiet café in its unofficial "Little France."
